A Divya desam temple of Lord Vishnu.

Legend is that Lord Vishnu came here to solemnize the marriage of Goddess Meenakshi with Sundareswar (Lord Shiva) at Meenakshi temple of Madurai. Lord Vishnu is considered as Azhagar or brother of Meenakshi at Madurai.

The idol of Lord Vishnu is taken in a grand ceremonial procession to Madurai Meenakshi Temple during the Chithirai festival at Meenakshi Temple. During the festival, wedding ceremony of Sundareswar and Meenakshi takes place, in the presence of Azhagar or Lord Vishnu of this temple. Even today, many believe that getting married at this temple is auspicious.

The temple is on a picturesque setting, surrounded by thick forest. Original construction by the Pallavas. The Pandya.and the Nayak rulersof Madurai made valuable additions later on.

The Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple, one of the Aarupadai veedu shrines of Lord Muruga, is at a walk able distance.

Azhagar Kovil is 20 Kilometers from Madurai.
