The Sun God or Surya consecrated the temple here.

The Shiva Linga is 16 feet high from the base. The sanctum sanctorum has two floors. The puja and abhisheka is performed on the second floor.

The deity is known as Bhimeswar. The famous Dakshayaga of King Daksha was believed to have taken place here. Thus the place became Draksharam.

The temple also houses one of the 51 Shaktipeethas of Goddess Parvati.Here, she is known as Manikamba. It is believed that Satidevi’s navel part fell here.

The temple tank, Sapta Godavari thirth, is held in high reverence.

The temple, which is presently under the control of archaeological department, has features of both Chola and Chalukya architecture.

It is in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, about 38 kilometers from Kakinada via Ramachandrapuram.

Convenient railheads are Samalkot and Kakinada.
