A well-known abode of Goddess Durga in Kashmir.
Legend is, Ravana- the demon king of the Hindu epic Ramayan, worshiped this Goddess at his palace in Sri Lanka. When he was killed by Lord Sriram, the Goddess asked Lord Hanuman to take back the Goddess idol which Ravan had worshiped and install at a suitable place. Hanuman did so and selected this place in kashmir to re-install the idol.
The famous shrine is in the middle of a holy spring. The specialty of the spring is that it changes colour occasionally. Having a black colour on its water is considered inauspicious.
The present temple dates back to 1920’s.
It is at Tulamala village, about 14 kilometers from Srinagar- the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir.
