One of the six Shiva Temples in Tamilnadu (others are Tiruankaadu, Chayaavanam, Tiruvaiyaru, Tiruvanchiam and Tiruvidaimarudar) considered as equal to the Kasi temple.

Legend says, after Dakshayaga, Goddess Sati took form of a peacock (Mayur or Mayil) and worshipped Lord Shiva here to get him as husband. Tiruppariyalur Veerattam, where the Dakshyagnam believed to have taken place is eight kilometers away.

The original temple is a Chola contribution on the banks of river Kaveri.

The place is about 281 kilometers from Chennai.
