The legend is associated with the killing of the demon Tripurasur by Lord Shiva. The place got the name from the Bhima River that is flowing nearby.

The present temple dates back to 18nth century AD.
The temple is on the Sahyadri ranges of Westernghat amidst thick virgin forest. The journey to the temple, along with the breath taking beauty of the Sahyadri ranges, is memorable. A must for nature lovers!

The temple is 115 kilometers from Pune- the nearest Major city.

Please note that Bhimashankar in Bhimapur of Assam and Bhimashankar at Kashipur near Nainital of Uttar Pradesh are also claiming to be the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga.
