Stalasayana Perumal (Lord Vishnu) Temple, Mahabalipuram

A Divyadesam Shrine of Lord Vishnu.

According to the legend, a Saint called Pundarika Muni had a vision of Lord Vishnu as Anantasayi (Lord Vishnu in reclining posture) at this spot. Accordingly, the temple has the idol of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture, facing east.

The original temple is built by the Pallavas. The temple had a major renovation in the 19th Century AD.

The ancient Hindu temple is very near the famous Mamallapuram seashore temple at Mahabalipuram, about 105 kilometers from Chennai.

Easily accessible by road from Chennai.
